MINNEAPOLIS (March. 21, 2023) — The Allina Health Cancer Institute (AHCI) has added ClinicalPath, a decision support tool that draws on the experience of hundreds of other oncology programs around the world with the aim of improving patient care and outcomes. More than 70 percent of large oncology programs use a third-party clinical pathway, such as ClinicalPath.
“ClinicalPath offers an opportunity to measure, report, and improve quality of care, from driving evidence-based targeted therapy to enhancing efficiency through standardization and clinical trial participation,” said Dr. Badrinath Konety, MD, president, Allina Health Cancer Institute.
ClinicalPath protocols present optimal treatment options for cancer patients that may include recommended dosing, time frames and sequencing of therapies. These recommendations are developed by disease specific committees comprised of oncologists representing both academic and community medicine at more than 50 institutions that use ClinicalPath.
“ClinicalPath supports the appropriate use of precision oncology from within the clinical workflow, ensuring that patients are not over- or under-tested, and that targeted therapies are used when appropriate, helping optimize patient outcomes,” said Mike Koroscik, AHCI, Vice President.
ClinicalPath has been used for more than a decade in the oncology space, with the aims of improving patient care and communication while focusing on outcomes and maximizing resource utilization by reducing unwarranted variation and promoting the use of higher value therapy. High-quality pathways support the standardization of oncology care, helping Allina Health perform more predictably and sustainably.
In recent years, there have been important developments in oncology treatment. Advancements in drug discovery, innovations with tumor detection technology and the explosion of targeted therapies have improved outcomes and brought hope to patients and their families. These resources, available through ClinicalPath, aid in prioritizing interventions based on importance, resources, and outcome for optimal care delivery.
