Faribault, Minn. (Nov. 8, 2023) — The Faribault Public Schools Athletic Department now has a second life-saving automated external defibrillator (AED), thanks to the Faribault Medical Center Auxiliary. The Auxiliary donated the funds as part of its mission to support the health of the larger community.
Professional football player Damar Hamlin’s on-field cardiac arrest last year drew attention to the importance of AEDs. “It was a reminder to the country about the need to easily access these life-saving devices,” said Linda Mitchell, Faribault Hospital Auxiliary Board.
The Faribault Public Schools Athletic Department already had one AED, but often times, multiple sporting events occur at the same time. Activities Director Shane Gunderson reached out to the Auxiliary after recognizing the need for a second unit, especially for outdoor events like football, softball/baseball, cross country, tennis and more.
A second portable AED on site increases the safety of the athletes, as well as the spectators, fans and community members who come out to support the teams. “We certainly hope there is never a need for one of these devices, but we want to be prepared if there ever is,” said Mitchell.
