Abbott Northwestern Hospital seeks fourth Magnet designation for excellence in Nursing

Abbott Northwestern Hospital will be welcoming appraisers from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for its on-site Magnet survey this fall. This survey is the final step in Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s fourth Magnet designation, a worldwide award given to hospitals that demonstrate excellence in patient care, nursing, and professional practice.

Magnet designation is considered the highest level of nursing recognition for healthcare organizations. As of 2019, Abbott Northwestern Hospital has maintained Magnet Recognition Program status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The hospital first received the designation in 2009 and was redesignated in 2014 and 2019. Fewer than 10% of hospitals worldwide receive this recognition, and fewer than 2% have achieved their fourth recognition.

The ANCC says that Magnet hospitals consistently have better patient outcomes, including:

  • Shorter patient stays
  • Lower mortality rates
  • Higher patient satisfaction
  • Higher nurse retention, recruitment, and job satisfaction
