Annie Sterle expected a smooth childbirth, but as her labor progressed, she experienced cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. Sterle was in a coma for 16 days and suffered a number of strokes because of an amniotic fluid embolism. Both she and her son Henry have made a full recovery. She credits the care she received at Abbott Northwestern Hospital which included care through the Mother Baby Center and Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. Sterle shared her story with MPR News. Michael Samara, MD, Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute, was part of Sterle's care team and discussed the complexities of her case.
