Minnesota doctor recovers at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute after fall from mountain in Switzerland

[WCCO-TV News, December 26, 2024] Dr. Shirlee Xie was hiking in Switzerland with her husband when she fell about 300 feet off the side of a mountain. The ordeal left Dr. Xie with a C7 spinal cord injury, paralyzing her from the chest down. She cannot move her legs but has partial movement of her arms.

She does up to three hours of physical and occupational therapies each day at Allina Health Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. As she continues to work toward getting stronger and returning to work as a physician, she is raising awareness about the overall impact of a spinal cord injury. She spoke to WCCO-TV about her journey.
