PGY1 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy

The PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. 

Program Goals

The goal for each of our pharmacy residents is to graduate with:

  • greater clinic knowledge and confidence to care for patients
  • increased compassion and empathy for those we serve
  • the ability to communicate effectively with both patients and colleagues
  • experience teaching students, patients and healthcare professionals
  • an understanding of how to manage a pharmacy practice with focus on continual practice improvement

Practice Management Longitudinal

  • Updating protocols and collaborative practice agreements
  • Expansion/enhancement of MTM practice
  • MTM marketing and recruitment
  • Allina System Formulary experience (1 week)
  • Evidence-based Medicine and Building a MTM Practice courses
  • Development of resources with Patient Education Department
  • Involvement with informatics workflow

Research Longitudinal

  • APPE student precepting

Staffing – 120 Hours

Elective Learning Experiences

Geriatrics – 4 Weeks

  • Hospice pharmacy care
  • Pharmacy consulting for transitional and long-term care facilities
  • Patient education through Stepping On program

Staffing

The resident is able to gain valuable experience in the Allina Health West Health retail pharmacy. Within this staffing role, the resident will understand what patients experience after prescriptions leave the clinic. Allina Health Pharmacies have kind, supportive staff and the rotation has been a great experience for residents. Staffing occurs during weekdays for a total of 120 hours in the fall. The resident has the option for additional weekend hours at the pharmacy as a float pharmacist.
