Forty percent of Americans are sleep deprived. As a pulmonologist and sleep medicine doctor, I can tell you there is a benefit to afternoon naps for adults. In a study of NASA astronauts, they were 100 percent more alert and 40 percent more productive after taking a 40-minute nap in the middle of their day. Keep the nap short—just 20 to 40 minutes.
